The Atlantic Ocean Road and Hustadvika

This unique highway brings you out where the mainland ends and the great ocean begins. Once there, the boundless majesty of the ocean will provide you with sights and memories you will never forget.
West if the Atlantic Ocean Road lies the infamous shipping lane "Hustadvika" where the endless wrecks on the bottom of the sea bear a silent witness of past drama and death. This is an eldorado for sportdivers.

Grand opening in 1989
Around 1900 as many as 120 people lived on these windswept islands. They made their living from fishing and drying fish. Since 1909 plans have been made to connect the island of Averøy to the mainland. At the time a railroad was considered to be the best alternative, but as the automobile became more available the railroad plans were put aside in 1935. In the 1970`s new plans of a connecting road were made, and the construction work started i August 1, 1983. The grand opening took place on July 7, 1989.

The Atlantic Road zigzags across bridges and rock-fills from island to island right out at the ocean's edge. It is easy to park your car in one of the many lay-bys and walk a few metres to the smooth coastal rocks and some excellent fishing spots. A stone's throw or two to the west the shipping lane crosses the notorious waters of Hustadvika, concealing innumerable wrecks.

Used to stormy weather
Many people take a trip out here when the autumn storms start to rage - it is quite a sight when the big waves break beside (and sometimes across) the road. The road workers experienced 12 hurricanes during the construction of the Atlantic Road before it was opened.
